Corporate Standardbred


A registered stable, estate or multiple ownership entity, such as a corporation or a partnership, that owns a horse must be licensed by the Ontario Racing Commission using the Standardbred Stable Licence Application Form.

Prior to being licensed, the ownership must first be registered with the breed registry body, either Standardbred Canada or the United States Trotting Association.

Application Process
A complete application includes:
  • Completed form(s) as required
    Standardbred Stable Licence Application
    Sandardbred Individual Licence Application
  • Applicable fees   
    Standardbred Fee Schedule
  • Business documentation as follows:
    • Corporation - Profile Report for the corporation name from the Ministry of Government Services www.mgs.gov.on.ca

    • Partnerships (General and Limited) - Business Names Report from the Ministry of Government Services www.mgs.gov.on.ca               
Standardbred - Stable Application

Cost 
The fee for a stable licence is $200.00. 
Individuals who must be licensed as part of the requirements, must submit a separate Standardbred Individual Licence Application and include the fee of $100.00. 
There is a one-time fee of $20.00 for any new application. 

Effect of Suspension 
In the event that one or more of the members of a registered stable is suspended, the suspension shall also include any horses owned wholly or in part by the stable. 

Changes to Business Entity 
Any changes to the business entity must be reported to the Ontario Racing Commission and any licensing requirements due to the change completed. 

Who and What Needs to be Licensed 
Corporation – with less than 10 shareholders

  1. the corporation
  2. every director
  3. every shareholder

Corporation – with 10 or more shareholders, but less than 50

  1. the corporation
  2. every director
  3. every shareholder holding or controlling a number of shares giving him/her 5 per cent or more of the voting rights in the corporation

Corporation – with 50 or more shareholders, or which is registered with a Canadian stock exchange

  1. the corporation
  2. every director or every member of the executive committee of the board of directors
  3. every person acting as chairperson, secretary or holding a similar office
  4. the person responsible within the corporation for the activities for which the licence is required
  5. every shareholder holding or controlling a number of shares giving him/her 5 per cent or more of the voting rights in the corporation

General Partnership

  1. the partnership, if 5 or more partners
  2. the manager or any person holding a similar office
  3. every partner

Limited Partnership

  1. the limited partnership
  2. the general partner and where the general partner is a corporation or a general partnership, the persons covered by sub-sections (a), (b), (c) and (d) of this section
  3. the manager or the general partner or any person holding a similar office

Registered Stable Name

  1. the stable name
  2. the owner or owners of the stable

Estate

  1. the estate
  2. the executors of the estate
